Quiet Understanding
Commissioned for Conquest Hospital’s new Acute Mental Health Unit, Hastings. 1999
Simon's first public commission is this sculpture and courtyard design with specific planting that fosters a sense of calm and tranquility for the clients of the building: plants which create different sounds in the wind, have different shapes and textures when touched, and the sculpture which has water slowly flowing from a central void, only to drop back in the reservoir below, making a soothing trickling sound. It is also a direct culmination of a body of work of smaller sculptures (Divine Shapes) which he exhibited the year before in his first solo show, with Paul Stolper.
