Landscapes of Progress?: NEW WORK AT HESTERCOMBE GALLERY

11 November 2023 - 3 March 2024
Overview

What is progress? How do we relate to landscape?

This group exhibition brings together six artists: Rebecca Chesney, Simon Hitchens, Marie-Louise Jones, Hugo Lami, Madinah Farhannah Thompson and Mirte van Duppen; all of whom make work inspired by these questions. Whether attempting to understand and present individual views of the world around us, exploring history, change or using innovation and environmental ways to create art.

I will be exhibiting a new work made specifically for Hestercombe. Titled One Day, it consists of one durational day drawing and three accompanying concrete shadow sculptures. The work is centred around a piece of Morte slate, sourced from Hestercombe gardens.

The  process-based drawing is made in, of and about the landscape: the result of a particular set of conditions, in a particular place, over a particular span of time. It records celestial time, geological time, and human time, as well as the weather patterns unique to that day and site: a meditation on time and space.

The three accompanying sculptures which complete the work One Day, give form to the negative, liminal space of shadows cast from the rock at sunrise, midday, and sunset. Directly indexed to the parent drawing, these brooding black concrete sculptures, each with a cave-like void of the now absent rock and recording celestial phenomena, uncannily link us to the past through the present and in doing so, connect us to something larger than ourselves.
